War Service 1861 adjutant general of Indiana forces, April 1861 Col. of 11th Indiana, service in West Virginia, September appointed 1861 Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, Fort Donelson, March 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Divn at Shiloh, served on commissions and boards, checked Early at the Monocracy River, member of the military commission which tried the Lincoln conspirators and president of court-martial of Henry Wirz of Andersonville fame.
Post War Career Governor of New Mexico Territory, US minister to Turkey, prolific writer, lecturer, and speaker.
