Gen. of Volunteers, topographical engineer in Peninsula campaign, commanded 3rd Divn/V Corps at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, commanded 2nd Divn/III Corps at Gettysburg, July 1863 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, chief of staff to Meade, commanded II Corps after Hancock left field service at Petersburg, Appomattox.
Brevet Promotions Brig. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865, Maj. Gen. U.S.A. March 13 1865.
Post War Career Army service as commander of the Corps of Engineers, author, retired 1879.
